Kerala Upgrades Six Stroke Care Units to Global Standards

In a landmark step for public healthcare, Kerala is raising the bar for stroke treatment by upgrading six dedicated stroke centers across the state to meet international standards. The hospitals—located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, and Kozhikode—will now be certified by the World Stroke Organization (WSO) as well as India’s National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH).
Why This Matters
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and disability in Kerala, often leaving survivors with long-term physical and cognitive challenges. Quick medical response and specialized care are critical in preventing irreversible damage. By adopting international protocols, Kerala aims to drastically improve patient outcomes.
Key Features of the Upgrade
Rapid Diagnosis: Advanced imaging facilities and fast-track assessment protocols to identify stroke within the crucial “golden hour.”
Thrombolysis Treatment: Ready access to clot-busting drugs and standardized care pathways.
Neuro-Rehabilitation: Structured programs to support recovery and reintegration into daily life.
Quality Benchmarking: First-of-its-kind unit-level certification ensures that each stroke care unit, rather than just the hospital, is accountable for performance.
A National First
This initiative marks the first time in India that stroke units within government hospitals will be held to international certification standards. It signals Kerala’s growing emphasis on specialized, evidence-based healthcare delivery.
What Lies Ahead
Officials believe that this model can eventually be extended to other districts, making stroke care more accessible across the state. The initiative is also expected to reduce the burden on families, who often struggle with the emotional and financial costs of post-stroke care.
