COVID Cases Rise Again in Kerala in May — 182 New Infections Linked to Omicron Sub-Variants JN.1, LF.7, NB 1.8

COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise in Kerala during the month of May, with 182 new cases reported due to the spread of Omicron sub-variants JN.1, LF.7, and NB 1.8. The virus has been most active in the districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thiruvananthapuram. Although symptoms have generally remained mild, health experts are concerned about the high transmission potential of these variants.

Health Minister Veena George has urged the public to remain vigilant. Mask-wearing is mandatory in hospitals, and it is highly recommended for individuals with symptoms, the elderly, and pregnant women to wear masks in public spaces. Hospitals have been instructed to ensure timely testing and treatment of infected individuals. Additionally, unnecessary referrals from private to government hospitals are to be avoided.

With the onset of the monsoon season, the risk of diseases like dengue and leptospirosis is also increasing. The Health Department has reminded local self-government bodies to strengthen preventive measures and submit action reports to the government.

While the COVID threat may appear subdued, complacency could lead to renewed problems. The responsibility of each individual is crucial for a safe and healthy Kerala.
