Microplastic Pollution in Periyar River: A Silent Crisis Unchecked

The Periyar River, often called the lifeline of central Kerala, is facing a growing environmental threat—microplastic pollution. Recent findings by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) reveal that there is no proven scientific method available yet to control microplastic contamination in the Edayar region of the river.

The contamination is believed to have originated from the historic waste dumping by a now-defunct paper mill, which left behind residues that have broken down over time into harmful microplastics. Unlike larger pollutants that can be filtered or physically removed, these tiny plastic fragments infiltrate the ecosystem at a microscopic level—affecting fish, water quality, and even entering the human food chain.

Why This Matters

  • Ecological impact: Microplastics disrupt aquatic biodiversity, harming fish populations and weakening the ecological balance of Kerala’s most industrially exploited river.

  • Health concerns: Studies worldwide link microplastics in water sources to long-term health risks, including hormonal imbalance and digestive system disorders.

  • Policy gap: The absence of a defined control strategy underlines how unprepared authorities are to address emerging forms of pollution.

The Way Forward

While Kerala has made strides in banning single-use plastics and promoting green alternatives, the Periyar case shows that legacy pollution requires a different approach. Environmentalists are calling for:

  • Advanced research into microplastic removal technologies.

  • Regular monitoring of contamination levels.

  • Strict accountability for industrial waste management.

  • Awareness campaigns to curb further plastic inflow.

The Periyar’s plight is not just about a river but about the future sustainability of Kerala’s environment and public health. Unless addressed urgently, this “silent crisis” may leave long-lasting scars.
