Kerala politics has been shaken once again as Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil faces fresh allegations of sexual misconduct—this time from a transgender activist who has accused him of making obscene and threatening remarks.
According to the activist, the MLA reportedly said, “He wants to rape me”, sparking outrage and triggering a wave of condemnation from various sections of society.
Not the First Allegation
This is not an isolated case. Earlier, actor Rini Ann George and writer Honey Bhaskaran had also accused Rahul Mamkootathil of similar misconduct. With this being the third accusation in recent months, questions over political accountability, women’s safety, and the treatment of marginalized voices are being raised with urgency.
Growing Political & Public Outcry
The allegation has intensified debates across Kerala’s political landscape. Opposition leaders are demanding strict action, while human rights groups stress the importance of protecting complainants, especially from vulnerable communities like the transgender population.
Social media has also amplified the discussion, with many questioning whether political privilege shields leaders from the consequences of their actions.
Larger Questions of Power & Accountability
This case reflects more than just one allegation—it raises larger issues about:
Power dynamics in politics.
Gender justice and the treatment of women and trans persons.
Legal accountability of elected representatives.
Activists argue that without strict consequences, misconduct within power corridors risks becoming normalized.
What Lies Ahead?
As of now, no official disciplinary action has been taken against the MLA. However, with mounting pressure from civil society and media, the Congress party may soon be compelled to address the allegations more directly.
The incident is expected to spark fresh discussions on gender sensitivity, political integrity, and institutional support for survivors of harassment in Kerala and beyond.
