Kerala Empowers Bus Passengers with Real-Time Violation Reporting

In a significant step towards commuter safety, Kerala’s Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has rolled out a WhatsApp-based complaint system allowing passengers to directly report violations by private bus operators.
From now on, every private bus in Kerala will display RTO WhatsApp numbers inside the vehicle. Passengers can use these numbers to report:
Overspeeding
Reckless or negligent driving
Verbal abuse or harassment
Overcrowding and route violations
These complaints will be routed to the concerned Regional Transport Office (RTO) for immediate action.
🚨 "We want to create an environment where passengers feel empowered to speak up and expect accountability. This system allows quick, trackable communication between commuters and authorities," an MVD official said.
Why It Matters:
This initiative comes at a crucial time when monsoon rains have made roads more dangerous. With slick highways and poor visibility, ensuring safe bus operations is no longer optional—it's urgent.
Private buses have long faced criticism over speeding, rash driving, and rude behavior. While past complaints often went unresolved, the new WhatsApp-first system introduces a real-time, verifiable, and district-specific approach to enforcement.
✅ How You Can Use It:
Spot a violation?
Take a photo or video if safe.
WhatsApp it to the RTO number displayed in your bus.
Include details like bus number, location, time, and type of violation.
Looking Ahead
Will this system bring real change? That depends on public participation and swift government response. But the tools are finally in place—and for Kerala’s thousands of daily bus commuters, that’s a promising start.
