The laughter of children should spread throughout the house. However, what happened to the 11-year-old girl from Pothankott in Thiruvananthapuram is something we all need to know. It was her mother’s friend who assaulted the child, right in their own home.

What the child said is shocking: “My mother herself sent me to his room. When I told my mother about it, she said not to speak about it outside.”

The mother, who should be the one to provide shelter, is the one who facilitated the abuse, which breaks the trust.

When the details of this incident came to light, the police filed a case under the POCSO Act. The male friend is the first accused, and the mother is the second accused.

In a time when we hope for everything to be good, such an incident forces us to reflect again. Listening to our children, not dismissing their doubts, and protecting them completely – this is the responsibility of every parent.

When hearing all this, one question lingers in the mind – will there ever come a day when every home is safe?
